Russian Fairy Tales

Many Russian lacquer boxes illustrate Russian fairy tales. Actually maybe "folk tales" is a more appropriate term since Russian tales have no fairies. Whatever you call them, knowing the story always makes you appreciate the artwork on the doll or box all the more.

Here are a few translated summaries of some of those tales.

Alyonushka (Alenushka)

Emelya and the Will of the Pike

The Fisherman and the Golden Fish

The Fox and The Wolf

The Frog Princess

The Geese and The Swans

The Golden Cockerel

Ivan, the Firebird, and the Gray Wolf

Ivan and the Humpbacked Pony

Kolobok

Morozko (Father Frost)

Sadko

The Scarlet Flower

Silver Hoof

The Sleeping Princess and the 7 Bogatyrs

The Snowmaiden - Version I

The Snowmaiden - Version 2

Tsar Saltan (Swan Princess, Magic Squirrel)
